Getting Started with Doc Variables

Doc Variables is a Google Docs add-on that brings template automation to your documents. Instead of manually replacing placeholders like [Company Name] over and over, you define variables once and let the add-on fill them in automatically.

Installation

Install Doc Variables from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Once installed, open any Google Doc and find it under Extensions → Doc Variables.

Basic Syntax

Variables use double curly braces: {{Variable Name}}

When you run Replace Variables, Doc Variables scans your document, finds every variable, and replaces it with the corresponding value from your data source.

Your First Template

1. Create a Google Doc with some variables
2. Open the Doc Variables sidebar
3. Enter values manually or connect a Google Sheet
4. Click Replace Variables
5. Your document is populated instantly

Next Steps

Explore conditional sections, loops, and spreadsheet-driven batch generation to scale your document automation.
